In May 2023, 31 qualitative and quantitative samples of macrobenthic fauna were collected to support the establishment of an annual monitoring network and to evaluate the conservation status of the investigated areas. Sampling sites included the Sulina branch, rectified meanders, natural channels, and lakes. In October 2023, a second campaign was conducted with the same objectives, during which 30 additional macrozoobenthos samples were collected. The sampling network covered various locations along the Sulina Canal, rectified meanders, natural channels (at stations upstream and downstream of the bifurcation with the main distributary), lakes, as well as connecting channels to deltaic lakes, such as the Caraorman and Șontea canals.
